Jennifer Pluznick |
Johns Hopkins University, USA
Jen Pluznick received her Ph.D. in Renal Physiology from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha, NE) in 2005. She then spent five years training as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University (New Haven, CT), where she studied both renal physiology and sensory biology systems (in particular, olfaction).
She is interested in the role that chemosensation plays in regulating physiological processes, particularly in the kidney and the cardiovascular system. We have found that sensory receptors (olfactory receptors, taste receptors, and other G-protein coupled receptors) are expressed in the kidney and in blood vessels, and that individual receptors play functional roles in whole-animal physiology. She is currently working to identify the full complement of sensory receptors found in the kidney, and are working to understand the role that each receptor plays in whole-animal physiology by using a variety of in vitro (receptor localization, ligand screening) and in vivo (whole-animal physiology) techniques.
Title: Uncovering novel roles for sensory receptors in the kidney 09:00-09:30

Sung-Joon Lee |
Korea University, Korea
Sung-Joon Lee received his PhD at Harvard University majoring Nutritional Biochemistry in 2001 then he did postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine/Research Institute of Palo Alto Medical Foundation. He has been a faculty of Korea University since 2004. His major research topic is the investigation of biological activities of natural aroma compounds in herbs, teas, spices, and essential oils and has become interested in the role of ectopic olfactory receptors expressed in liver and adipose tissues as a target of aroma biomolecules in extra-nasal tissues. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed papers in SCI-listed internation journals (h-index 32). He is a board member of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research and a member of functional food material evaluation in the ministry of food and drug safety. He is also a head of Basic Research Laboratory titles 'Laboratory of Ectopic Olfactory and Taste Receptors' funded by National Research Foundation, Korea.

Inge Depoortere |
KU Leuven University, Belgium
She obtained her PhD in Sciences at the faculty of Medicine in Leuven in 1991. She was appointed at the University in Leuven in 2002 and became head of the "Gut Peptide Research Lab" of the Translational Research Center for Gastrointestinal Disorders in 2008. Currently, the main focus of her research is on the nutrient sensing mechanisms of gut epithelial cells and on the role of clock genes in the circadian regulation of physiological processes in the gut. She also studies the role of the hunger hormone ghrelin in the metabolic programming of obesity during maternal malnutrition. She has published more than 137 papers (h-index 36) in peer reviewed international journals. Inge Depoortere has been section editor of BMC Gastroenterology and is associate editor of Sci Rep, Am J Physiol and Peptides. She is member of the steering committee of the "International Regulatory Peptide Society" and is scientific advisor of several organizations.

Hiroaki Matsunami |
Duke University, USA
He is interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying chemosensation (taste and smell) in mammals. The receptors that detect odorants, pheromones, and many tastants including bitter and sweet chemicals are G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), which typically have seven transmembrane domains. There are many important questions that are still unanswered in chemosensory neurobiology. How do tens of thousands of different chemicals (tastants, odorants, or pheromones) interact with more than one thousand chemosensory receptors (about 1000 odorant receptors, 40 taste receptors and 200 vomeronasal receptors in the case of mice or rats)? How is the information coded in sensory cells and in the brain? How does the brain direct appropriate behavioral responses? What are the mechanisms underlying development and regeneration of sensory cells and specific synapse connections? His research addresses these questions using molecular biology, genome information and genetics.
Title: De-orphanizing mammalian olfactory receptors 10:30-11:00
